Baseball Hall of Famer, Clark Griffith was known as one of the most prolific minds to ever step onto the baseball diamond or into it’s front office.
A crafty, scientific pitcher, Griffith won 237 games in the era that was dominated by fireballers such as Cy Young, Kid Nichols and Amos Rusie. Besides being a successful player, he played keys roles in baseball history as a manager and executive.
For example, Clark Griffith was the first to extensively utilize relief pitching. As both a manager and executive, he was a pioneer in the recruiting, development and utilization of Cuban talent. He was the original organizer of the club now known as the New York Yankees and a respected figure in the national’s capital, with the ear and respect of nine U.S. Presidents. Many say – including Branch Rickey himself – that Griffith, as owner of the Washington Senators, integrated the game long before Jackie Robinson took the field in the major leagues.

The Evolution of Pitching: Witness the Changes in the Game as seen through the Biographies of Six Top 19th Century Pitchers, 100 pages
The fundamental element of baseball is the battle between the man with the ball, the pitcher, and the man with the bat. The collective biographies of six men – Asa Brainard, Bobby Mathews, Old Hoss Radbourn, John Clarkson, Cannonball Crane and Mark Baldwin – provide an excellent examination of the evolution of that confrontation. Brian McKenna has provided not only an exhaustive study of these men’s careers but has thoroughly presented the early history of pitching.
